IW0 - Inception

Doualé, Cameroon, Terra; March 10 2170 AD -- Life had been cramping Diane Ayatou's style like a dead bird hanging over the porch. Her dreams of the next big thing, of unfettered pop explosion seemed dead in the water for years. However, that stalled ship had sailed: she read once more her obituary and giggled. Of course, her wife will take a while to heal, but this is the cost of loving someone like her. Most importantly, the gremlins from the Atomic Energy Board were certain to get off her tail for as long as she was no longer a player in Western Africa.

The coffee shop was in an affluent neighbourhood of Doualé, the capital city of Cameroon. She met with Pierrot Ekangaki, a slippery business acquaintance that had made a career from harvesting money from small investors. He was sincere, at the very least. But dressed like a bore. Diane told him that she wanted to get the license for his Hero-class free trader because it was good time for her to literally get off the face of Terra. Pierrot was hesitant, but promised her the license if she could secure a competent slate of operators.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Terra; March 12 2170 AD -- Anika and Jane left the UWO low-security compound of the Rio campus as free women. Mistake were made and crimes atoned for. It was high time to feel the tingle of gravitic fields once more. With a credit account full from her work in the penal system, they caught a flight bound to Cameroon. Their objective: meet with an airhead looking to assemble "a bunch of sparkling assholes" to crew an old Hero-class.

Doualé, Cameroon, Terra; March 13 2170 AD -- The meeting took place in a coffee shop where the sun shines bright and the coffee price ignores the laws of supply and demand. When Diane arrived, two ex-marines were already there. Tom Anders and Aeryn Lorien we're exactly material for the next cardboard band: quiet and reasonable. Tom boasted his freight handling credentials as if the 3rd Interstellar war was still on. Aeryn had served as a nurse onboard a medical relief ship for the last two years. To the merry crew, a pair of ex-convict joined shortly later. Anika may have never smiled in the last ten years and seemed to struggle with words a bit as she spoke. Jaiying, or Jane, rapidly took over the agenda of the meeting. "Who can do what here? Or will I have to do everything by myself?" They found common ground and determined that they could be working together in a cramped space for 16 months.

Diane ran a search for an engineer on the usual right spots. Within the next day, they had Molly Pepper on video conference. She was just what they were looking for: a versatile engineer and a pleasant personality to work with. Conscious of their fixed cost, they offered her a partnership rather than a contract position.

Doualé, Cameroon, Terra; March 16 2170 AD -- The bunch of merry gals (and Tom) finally met with Ekangaki to get the paperwork sorted out. Ekangaki took a lot more care examining each operator's credentials, often interupting the meeting to look things up online. It even looked like someone at the other ends was performing some kind of fact checking.

Ekangaki explained that the ship and the capital was an important investment strategy for up to 2000 middle-class investors. He impressed on them how important the venture of Charter 22 was not only for them, but for hundreds of college kids, pensioners and single mothers.

The contract read as follow (exerpt only):

The chairman of the DOUALE CONSORTIUM has approved Charter 22 under the following terms. In this document, the signatory of Charter 22 are referred to as OPERATORS. All OPERATORS are equally liable and legally bound by the terms of Charter 22. DOUALE CONSORTIUM entrusts the operations of the following assets:

1. ASSETS

1.1 - TCIV CAMEROON, hero-class private merchant, Registration TER-F454AC-6.
1.2 - Operating Fund: 1.1 MCr
1.3 - 100T of hydrogen fuel
1.4 - Capital investment funds: 1.0 MCr

2. DURATION AND CONDITIONS
The OPERATOR are granted full operational control of TCIV CAMEROON from MAR.15.2170 to AUG.15.2171. Possession is to be taken and returned at TSS MERKEL, terran staging yard. The ship must be returned with the same level of readiness as when checked out (including a fully operational Jump-2 drive). Operations are granted under the following conditions:

2.1 - No warrant be issued against any of the OPERATORS of TCIV CAMEROON.
2.2 - Inventory and operating fund doesn’t get under 0.65 MCr upon reporting.
2.3 - Quarterly dividend meets (0.2 MCr). Exception can be granted for single quarter reporting.
2.4 - the Jump MkII drive renewal project isn't complete after 100 days.

Upon violation of these terms, the OPERATORS are legally required to return the ship to berth in the best possible times.

3. JUMP DRIVE RENEWAL PROJECT
The OPERATORS are to acquire a Jump drive MkII with the special capital fund, install and bring to operational status within the first 100 days of Charter 22. A MKII was located at the AHMED LLC scrapyard on Calisto as candidate replacement part.

It was agreed that the crew would set out ASAP for Calisto to purchase the new MKII Jumpdrive. The crew broke after the meeting to make last minute preparation and plan the first haul for Charter 22 of the venerable TCIV CAMEROON. Aeryn fetched her biotech gears, Tom went for another beer. Anika looked up deck plans for the Hero-class, Jane started to troll the tramp freight future market while Diane took a picture of her biscuit, but fell short of sharing with her friends since dead people usually don't do that kind of stuff.

Biography

Molly Pepper was a bright girl stuck in Prince Rupert, BC, Canada. Her mother was a big wheel in local government, while her dad was a doctor. She enjoyed a good life, but was bored. She was a sturdy girl, not attractive, but always had a smile on her face. She spent a lot of time on her computer playing video games, where she made friends easily. One was an Asian college student named Sum Gai, who joined her guild and was always available for raids or gaming world gossip.

Getting her hands dirty
Molly has a very powerful uncle who saw in her some potential. But she was stunted from a comfortable life in a rural backwater. He arranged for her to get a job to teach her the value of hard work, and she ended up on a fishing boat off the BC coast. She discovered that she liked working with machinery and her hands. She also realized that she agreed with him, and that her intelligence was wasted in manual labor. She decided to go to college. She worked double shifts for the rest of her stint on the boat and managed to put away a small nest egg for school.

No college? No problem!
Her uncle was called away on important Terran business, and missed the deadline to gain Molly admittance into college. Her hopes of getting into college dashed, she decided to enlist. She chose the Navy, so she could work on engines more. She ended up posted in a rough section of space patrolling for pirates. One battle ended with a bioweapon breach on her ship. She saw a crewmate get infected and eventually they died. She served her term and cashiered out as a Navy Spacer (Rank 1) with some good engineering skills under her belt.

Now college, no problem
With the help of her patron as well as the gold star on her application from her service, Molly throws herself into her studies. She bonds closely with her roommate, Mandy Pepperidge. She studies hard and learns a lot about engineering, both formal and informal. She also learns to socialize, although she prefers the blue collar bars to the preppie ones near the college. For her final project, she invents a tool that she saw a need for while in the navy. The Pepper Spanner. It makes a few of the tasks maintaining the jump drives much easier. This earns her a +3 reputation (inventor of the Pepper Spanner) only with Navy jumpdrive engineers, who rarely recognize her.

Padding her resume
Molly finished her bachelor’s degree and was not interested in more school. She missed the excitement of the Navy, but wanted something a little less lethal. She applied and was accepted as a rookie paramedic on one of the space colonies at Terra’s L4 collection. As a paramedic, she was pushed to improve her medical skills, as well as her ability to get around the station. She almost got in trouble with L4Sec when her partner was caught dealing in illegal drugs, but managed to demonstrate that she had nothing to do with his activities. She lost contact with her roomie from McGill when her roommate got married right out of college (she had made no secret of pursuing an MRS degree.)

Aeryn Lorien

Aeryn was an only child who moved around a lot and found her one constant in martial arts. She came from a loving supporting household and joined Marines as a way to continue training and to fund school. She found herself as a Nurse and a passion for science as well.

My father. His memory keeps me sane to this day.

32. What is your greatest regret?
Never acquiring any lifelong friends.

33. What is the most evil thing you have ever done?
Once, early on in my MMA career, I fought an inexperienced fighter. Much bigger than me but didn't belong in the ring. Tom Anders

And yes, I kiss my mother with these lips.
Tom Anders joined the Marines at the age of 18 - it was that or continue working on the family farm and getting in drunken fights with the other young men in the area with too much time on their hands. He was a natural fit, big and barrel chested, but with a quick mind as well under all the muscle.

He fit in well, and found his niche quickly. He was competent with a rifle but actually flourished in handling the mounds of red tape that any military organization creates as a waste product. He was quickly made company clerk and found his way almost indecently fast to the rank of Staff Sergeant where he stayed for fully half of his time in service. But he wasn't so entirely changed as to be able to keep out of trouble entirely, and his bull headedness got him into trouble a time or two along the way. His CO found an outlet for Tom by assigning him to training duty, specifically with unarmed combat. he became and instructor and taught young Marines how to handle themselves when they were disarmed.

Everyone knew Tom was a lifer, and he did his 20 years in service before he was finally cut lose. At 38 and in the best shape of his life, it seemed like he had the whole world in front of him, but after just six months out of the service he was ready to pull his crew cut hair out. He got out of the lease on his apartment and stowed his meager possessions at his parents' farm, a footlocker full of memories - uniforms, citations for good conduct, his shooting medals, pictures of himself and his fellow Marines, mostly. And a tricked-out grav car he'd bought with his mustering out money.

He started travelling the world at this point, taking on odd jobs, visiting his friends from the service who had managed, somehow, to find the sort of stability that he never found and now realized he'd never wanted. He made trips to all of the major cities - and the casualties of the atomic strikes that had scarred the earth so badly.

He was in Giza, at a bar that catered to military types, when he heard through the grapevine about a job possibility on a ship. A chance to not just get away from home but escape the bounds of gravity and get away from Terra - that sounded like just the thing. Flush from his most recent job, and with Kcr 10 in his pocket, he made his way to the promised interview site, only to find himself surrounded by the most unusual collection of people he'd ever laid eyes upon. Thank god some of them were Marines...

Background

Diane was born into a very wealthy Cameroonian family of mixed European and African descent. While pursuing her MBA, she met and fell in love with an Industrial Designer from Spain name Rosa, and the two married soon after graduation.

Early in her business career, Diane made some questionable deals that resulted in a few units of He3 being redirected away from a spaceport in Ecuador to a research lab in Peru in which Diane had invested. This drew the attention of the IAEA, who spent the next several years hounding her and her ventures across the Terran system.

Her feud with the IAEA put a terrible strain on Diane's marriage. In the end, to avoid a drawn-out divorce and further government interference, Diane paid a mercenary group to stage her death in a shuttle accident. She then signed on with the TCIV Cameroon, looking to get out of the system for a while and seek her fortune among the stars.

Jiaying “Jane” Calhoun grew up in a comfortable household on Mars. One of her moms was a police officer in the Tharis colony PD, the other an accountant for CeresCo, an asteroid mining operation. Growing up, she spent quite a bit of time at the police station, becoming almost an unofficial mascot for the day shift, including the watch captain, Captain leKerk (patron). She was bright but not exceptionally so. Her mothers both felt that exercise was important, so Jane was always involved in some sport or other. She has exceptionally good eyesight, which stood her in good stead when she settled on her sport of choice, tennis. In school she did well with anything involving numbers.

Jane launched into her academic career with a fury. She was great with numbers, and excelled in courses where a good number sense would help. She really liked cryptography, and ended up majoring in it, thinking she might find a career with some government or corporate intel gathering unit. She was good friends with a Cryppto grad student, Nikolai, and they had a grand time conversing on mathematics. For a man, he was all right. As she got older, she learned to go out and have a little fun, developing a taste for good alcohol. Her last year she had a scare when her roommate came down with Denebian crabs. Fortunately, Jane avoided her fate.

Graduating with her crypto degree, Jane decided to see what the galaxy was like, so she parlayed her skills into a naval commission. After Basic and OCS she was deployed on a cruiser to a low intensity patrol. The military life taught her some discipline, as well as the basics of combat and warfare. Towards the end of her tour there was an accident aboard ship. Jane froze, and was injured in the event. She spent time in the hospital, and chose not to re-enlist.

In Free Trading, Jane finally felt like she had found her home. She signed on the Really Peaceful and put her broad base of skills to good use. She met a nice girl who was also on the crew, Zhang Ziyi. They fell in love, and were soon married. Marriage suited Jane well, and she became somewhat of a homebody, foregoing her prior exercise routines in exchange for appreciating Zhang’s excellent cooking.

Of course, such a new lifestyle led to unexpected expenses. At one port of call, Jane decided to try her hand at a bit of smuggling. She cringed when police swooped down, only to arrest the person in front of her! She made her connection and came away with a nice little sum of cash, which she promptly spent on a present for Zhang.

Jane and Zhang settled in to Free Trader life quite happily. Both enjoyed the lifestyle, and worked hard to earn the money that required. Somewhere along the way, the outgo started to exceed the income. Maybe it was the speculative trip to Merabillis, or the disaster at Sharpedon. Jane started down a criminal path slowly, cooking the books to keep the home office happy, that sort of thing. Eventually, she started assisting her captain in a smuggling operation. Small, easily concealed contraband items at first. Larger cargos came eventually.

It all fell apart at a clandestine rendezvous in an asteroid belt near Arcturus. The captain’s timetable was tight, she skipped her usually thorough sensor sweep of the area, and was nabbed in the act by a random Patrol. Zhang was fortunately off-ship at the time, and claimed ignorance of the whole affair. Jane went to prison for three years. Zhang did not wait, and filed for divorce.

She is now out of prison and looking to start rebuilding her fortune.

The Doualé Consortium LLC

The consortium has Pierrot Ekangaki as its CEO. Pierrot is the mastermind behind the corporation that draws funds largely from a large number of small, middle-class investors.

Pierrot is on a one man mission to bring wealth to the Douale Consortium. His strategy is to use his social standing, reputation, current affairs contact and a light touch of psychology/carousing to recruit more investors into the consortium.

He has a nice office in downtown Doualé, but works mainly for people living in the Northern suburbs. He otherwise lives the life of a young professional with a good sum of disposable income. His personal life is on hold due to his obsession to make his business work. He wants out, but not until Doualé has a stable future ahead.

The consortium is run on a seat-of-the-pants basis. There is very little mobile assets to make things run smoothly. Consequently, Pierrot often has to appeal to investors for more funds. As a result, the consortium has learned to keep their distance with the man and are limiting their interactions to the occasional shareholder meetings.

Acquiring a freight contract

The PCs intend to head to the fringe of the empire. They intend to go from Terra to Nusku (6 pcs, 3 Jumps). The Bilateral Trade Number is 11.5 between the two world, adjusted down to 10 due to the range.

Acquiring a contract

After a few hours of trolling the tramp freight market, the best option is a package of 70 tons of valuable microbeads. Normally, the lot would go for about 273 KCr. However, the competition is intense. The ship's broker (Merchant-14) must apply -4 because this run follows a main trade route. The broker rolls a 8 vs Merchant-10, for a margin of +2. The contract is theirs for 287 KCr.

Expenses

Three jumps will be required. Each jump requires 20T of hydrogen. Each ton of hydrogen when refuelled at a spaceport is 350Cr/T. So the H2 budget is 21 KCr. Seven weeks of food for 6 is about 2 KCr. Consumable: 23 Kcr

Salaries: 6 crew for 7 weeks would be about 63 KCr

Maintenance: 6 KCr

Mortgage: 400 KCr

Total: ~500 KCr

In order to break even, the ship must find another contract to fill the other half of the hold.
